WHAT IS SIM?
Students in Mission is designed for United Methodist young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 who have completed at least one year in an institution of higher education. It is an opportunity to serve as a missionary for the summer in authentic mission sites within the state of South Carolina. SIM is a meaningful experience in intentional Christian living, faith in action and spiritual formation.
The program is sponsored by the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. The mission sites are developed by local churches, districts, urban and rural ministries, community centers, and social services agencies.
For the summer of 2018 there will be a number of challenging and personally fulfilling mission sites located around the state. Missioners will be assigned to a geographic cluster, covenanting to learn and grow together as they witness and experience Christ at work in the world.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE?
Students in Mission proposes to expose young adults to the mission of the church; to encourage and develop vocational discernment of young adults; to assist the church in carrying out specialized ministries; to stimulate the church in developing new ministries; to extend the missional outreach of the church; and through young adults, to make the church aware of needs in South Carolina.
HOW MUCH WILL I BE PAID?
Each missioner who is selected will receive a $2,750 stipend (before taxes) from the SC Conference of the United Methodist Church upon completion of the program. Housing, meals, and incidental expenses will be furnished by the mission site.
HOW DOES THE APPLICATION PROCESS WORK?
Interested students must submit a completed application, at least 3 references, and a non-refundable $15 application fee before February 28, 2018 (see application for details).
Applicants will be asked to schedule a video or phone interview with the selection committee in March (date and time to be determined). Interview results and site assignments will be announced by the end of March.
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF ME?
Prior to beginning their assignments, all missioners must attend an Orientation and Training Session at the South Carolina United Methodist Conference Center in Columbia, SC in May. Assignments will officially begin in early June and will continue through the end of July. Missioners will also be required to participate in at least one Reconnect Meeting as part of the program and to attend a final evaluation at the end of their service.
Participants in the SIM program will be expected to fully commit to the program and treat their service as they would a job or other important obligation. Missioners and sites will jointly develop contracts detailing the schedule, duties, and other requirements expected of the sites and missioners. Conflicts with the requirements of the program and/or site may be negotiated with site supervisors and SIM coordinators before the start of the missioner’s service.
