Look below for details on some of what we do at Wesley. Can we cover it all here? Will words capture everything that Wesley is. By no means. But this is a start. See what challenges you, where you might join in, or what you might want to help us get started for the first time.
Missions
[back]
One of the highlights of the year is the Spring Mission Week with SC United Methodist Campus Ministries. This year over 80 students from more than 8 schools headed to Harlem, NY to stay at Metropolitan Community UMC and Harlem UMC as they experienced urban ministries firsthand. The beginning of the trip focused on specific ministries and service in the community including cleaning and doing small repairs on a Hispanic UMC in the Bronx and creating a prayer garden at Metropolitan. The end of the trip was spent on two days of seminar through the General Board of Global Ministries and the Women's Division United Methodist Seminar Program. The topic, "Race and Urban Poverty", gave everyone an eye-opening understanding of racial and economic injustice. We also enjoyed seminars on Human Trafficking over Spring Break 2011 with Arizona State Wesley and Northern Illinois Wesley.
Wesley has also taken several week-long mission trips in past years. We went to D'Iberville, Mississippi to do hurricane relief work after Katrina. We've also worked with Bahamas Methodist Habitat on the island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas and worked on the house of a disabled man. We worshipped with the Bahamian people, got to know a beautiful culture and explored amazing caves and beaches. In 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011 we've had the opportunity of working with the Jubilee House Community in Managua, Nicaragua. We are committed to a continued partnership and support of the JHC and enjoy being a part of their speaking tour each year as well. Stay tuned for information about upcoming opportunities.
